Selection Procedure

A. Written Examination (AFCAT)

  • Purpose: Initial screening of candidates’ aptitude, reasoning, and general knowledge.
  • Date: 31 January 2026 (Saturday)
  • Exemption: NCC Special Entry candidates skip this stage.

Exam Structure

  • Format: Objective type, English only
  • Subjects: General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability, Reasoning, Military Aptitude
  • Duration: 2 hours | Questions: 100 | Marks: 300

Marking Scheme

  • +3 for correct answer
  • -1 for wrong answer
  • 0 for unattempted

Shortlisting

  • Candidates meeting minimum qualifying marks are called for AFSB
  • Branch-specific cut-offs may apply

B. Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) Testing

  • Purpose: Assess candidates’ mental, physical, and leadership abilities.
  • Who attends: Candidates who pass AFCAT or NCC Special Entry

AFSB Centres

  • Dehradun, Mysuru, Gandhinagar, Varanasi, Guwahati

Testing Stages

  1. Stage I – Screening
    • Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) & Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)
    • Document check for eligibility
    • Only Stage-I qualified candidates proceed to Stage II
  2. Stage II – Detailed Assessment
    • Psychological tests, group tasks, personal interviews (5 days)
    • Flying Branch: Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) – once-in-a-lifetime test
    • Candidates who previously failed CPSS/PABT are ineligible

Call-Up & Travel

  • Candidates select date & venue via AFCAT website
  • First-time attendees eligible for Travel Allowance (TA)

C. Medical Examination

  • Purpose: Verify physical fitness and medical suitability for service
  • Conducted by authorized medical establishments
  • Checks include: drugs/narcotics, height, weight, vision, tattoo restrictions

D. Final Merit List & Training

  • Purpose: Confirm selection and assign training based on merit
  • Candidates must qualify separately in written exam and AFSB
  • Selection depends on performance, medical fitness, branch vacancies, and candidate preferences
  • Training Start: First week of January 2027
  • Note: Candidature can be cancelled at any stage if ineligible
